Future vs Past

Albert Einstein said "We had better pay attention to the future, after all that's where we will spend the rest of our lives" Ok well that's obvious isn't it...so here is the question then...if we believe this to be true - and lets face it, it's hard to argue against ! - why do we spend so much time thinking, talking, worrying about the past ???
Today, every time you find yourself thinking about something that has gone wrong or something that has already happened, I want you to STOP and change your thinking to how you will react in the future, or how you can change this to be a positive ?
Today think about what you want, not what you don't want - talk to people in your team about what you like about them, what you want to see in the future - if they try and drag you back to the past then ask them "What are our learnings from this experience ?"
One final thought how much is - Is your team talk aimed at reporting the past or talking about the future ? Keep everyone focused in the past and that's where people will stay...look to the future and funnily enough we tend to get what we expect......

I suppose it's too easy to look back when something's gone wrong and focus on the negatives, rather than having the confidence to look to the future, as it might mean you have to go out of your comfort zone..

Reminds me of another quote - "Most people would rather be certain they're miserable than risk being happy !"

Does it depend whether you're an optimist or pessimist at heart as to whether you look to the past? How do you convert those pessimists into looking to the future?

Easy answer is that you can't make anyone change - that lies with the individual. So I would tell the person about the bicycle and the rock i.e if you focus on the rock when youa re out riding you will hit it. Now maybe thats what you want to do but realise that you will get hurt or disappointed. If you want to avoid the rock aim at the clear open road and enjoy ! If the past has caused some unhappiness you have to work harder on learning from those experiences to ensure you get what you really really want not what you expect for yourself. Focus the energy on talking about what you are going to do rather than talking about the past which you cannot change. Talk success not failure and your brain will grow to enjoy it !!
