Understanding Motivation

People often make the mistake of believing motivation is about getting people to do what YOU want them to do. WRONG! Fundamentally it is about getting people to do it because THEY want to do it. SO how do you achieve this?
  1. Give them a clear goal and check they understand it fully by getting them to explain it to you.
  2. Translate the goal into what they will personally achieve by succeeding.
  3. Give feedback along the way and support them in removing obstacles to their progress.
  4. Celebrate their achievement - it reinforces for next time. People need that recognition.
  5. Check at the end how they have grown and ensure they have got what they wanted out of it.

People need you to lead them...the skill in motivation is seeing it from the other persons side.
