Make Business Decisions Quickly
Leadership is about making decisions...understanding what are the decisions that need to be made, asking the right questions to find the best answer, understanding what decisions you need to make and what decisions your teams need to make..
Meetings can be such a blocker to speedy decision making, they also can harm the overall decision by diluting the answer to appease people. Successful companies find a way of making speedy decisions, well assessed yes, but knowing that there will always be an element of risk. If there is no risk then you are probably not leading you are following other leaders or companies.
As a modern leader, time is of the essence....as the authors continue
"The fast thinker has a good memory, learns from previous experiences and always learns from failure including the unexpected failures that occasionally take place"

A Thought on Arguments from De Bono
He talked about how in an argument we concentrate on the 5-10% that we disagree upon and not the 90-95% upon which we do agree....
If there is one thing that we could do as leaders is play angels advocate......instead of looking for what we disagree upon lets look at the shared agreements...a wonderful thought.

Don't Forget the Quiet Talent
Claudius became Emperor in AD41 and far from the obvious choice. He limped, stuttered and was perceived as weak. He had been kept in seclusion as his family was embarassed about him! When there was a huge power struggle, many nobles were killed and left Claudius as the last surviving male. This was the time that Claudius showed his astute ability as a leader...this person who people had perceived as weak proved to be a good leader throughout his 13 year rule with a spate of impressive public works and the conquest of Britain.
Never be fooled by a perception, don't assume......look through the shyness, and assess the ability.

Learn from the Past, Rather than Live in the Past
The French built The Maginot line to keep the Germans at bay - a series of anti tank traps, observation posts and pillboxes. Great for how the previous war had been fought - static fighting. But in 1940 the line was broken by thousands of well armed German troops who unlikebefore, were highly mobile. Times had moved on, what worked in the past no longer worked now.
This is so true for business. You can have a "lessons learned" after large events, then when faced with new challenges look for the trends on what was important last time and ensure that you have improved your approach as well as updated it for today's world.
Experience the past to live the future!

Inner Values
"In 1957 a group of monks in Bangkok had to move a 2.5 ton clay Buddha to make way for a new road. After starting the manoeuvre via a crane it started to rain. The chief monk was concerned as it began to crack, so stopped the crane and covered the Buddha up overnight. That night he went out to look at the crack to assess the problem. As he shone the torch a gleam came from under the crack - the Buddha was really made of gold - a protective layer had covered up its true value"
Mmmm how often does that happen at work, how often do we see someone's protective layer rather than the hidden talent - the treasure, inside them. Teams are made of very special people, they have chosen to work for us - what a compliment! Each one is unique and their value is worth protecting. How closely do you look for the gold?

Creating Change in Business
"One evening an old farmer was walking along a country lane. He looked into a field and saw a group of young women bathing naked in a pond. The woman noticed him at about the same time as he noticed them.
One woman shouted "We're not coming out till you leave"
The farmer replied with a grin "Oh, I'm not here to watch you ladies swimming naked or running round the meadow naked....I'm just here to feed the alligator"
The farmer created the potential for a change in mindset. He thought about the context, the situation and thought of something that was valuable to the women - their life. What are your alligators?

A leaders role - Finding the angel inside
"Michelangelo, when asked by a young boy why he was hitting a large piece of rock with his hammer and chisel replied, "Because there's an angel inside and I'm helping him to escape"
For me that is what management is about, we all have mundane work to do but we should never lose sight of our purpose - to find that talent in our people. We are here to create the future, we are hear to find the angel inside....
