When you get stuck on a problem...

We all face it in business...we all cannot, at some time or another see the 'wood for the trees'. The problem is, in our desire to find the answer we don't stand back or relax.....allowing the answer to emerge. A lesson we can all learn is from the Archimedes approach to problem solving...

Syracuse's King gave Archimedes a problem to solve - namely to find out is the if the gold crown really was gold. He was stuck, didn't know what to do. He took a bath to relax and that is when the answer came - leading to the famous Eureka moment. He realised through the water level rising when he got in the bath, that this was the way to measure the crown's density.

As hard as it is, when faced with a dilemma often the best cause of action is to walk away, relax...let your brain have the chance to muse subconsciously.....doing that can provide you with your own Eureka moment!

The Importance of Learning

My first boss was wonderful and he believed in lifelong learning, both in your work and personal life. Here is a story he told me

"The baby mice were just a few days old and having fun when a large black shadow fell over them so they stopped playing. A huge tomcat was towering above them licking his lips and anticipating lunch. Quick as a flash the mother mouse jumped over her babies, looked straight at the Tomcat and barked "Woof! Woof!"
The cat startled and ran. "Let that be a lesson to you" said the mother mouse. "Never underestimate the importance of learning a second language"

In your work and life you all have important skills, improving and learning new ones ensures that your personal brand stays fresh and increases in value to those around you.

Self Development and Building a Team

A native American grandfather was talking to his grandson about how he felt. He said "I feel as if I have 2 wolves fighting in my heart. One wolf is vengeful, angry and violent. The other wolf is loving and compassionate." The grandson looked at his grandfather and said "Which wolf will win the fight in your heart?" The grandfather looked and said "The one that I feed"

Often we don't stop and feed the compassionate side of us. You choose whether to be angry or to inspire. I know which one I like to choose as inspiring others is one of the best feeling in the world, to see your team grow and develop because of YOUR leadership...wow!
