If it ain't broke...fix it!

Often we wait until something is broken before we fix it....why not fix it before it is broken.

A great example is Dick Fosbury. People had a way of teaching the high jump - it worked. But Dick Fosbury reinvented the method. He developed a revolutionary approach that took high jump to ...new heights!

He didn't have exceptional strength or speed but what he had was a revolutionary approach that brought him a gold medal at the 1968 Olympics.

He did not listen to the critics, the people who banned the technique...he believed in his ability to create a new method that would help him achieve his dream

Do you wait until it is broke, or do you challenge the norm, do you challenge yourself and your team to continue improving?

Employee Engagement

Aristotle said

"Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work"

I love this quote as it sums up in 9 words why leaders should be concerned with the "happiness" of their employees at work. If people feel values, if they feel listened to, if they feel their work is meaningful...then this will be reflected in their work.

A Thought on Praise

Always remember

"A pat on the back is only a few inches higher than a kick in the butt"

For a matter of inches, we often forget the former......reach that little higher when you need to and it will increase your leadership potential.

How long does it take to build a ship?

Back in the 1930's it took years, then an upstart called Henry Kaiser came along.

He built his first ship in 240 days.

Soon he built one in 9 days!

Then in a contest with another shipyard he built one in 4 days, 15 hours, 29 minutes!!

Why, because he didn't live by the past, he decided to break the rules, he decided that he wanted to and then concentrated on the "how"

Time is precious, do you set deadlines to the old rules, to the "norm" or do you allow people to think differently?

The Impact of a Leader

It is vital that we understand the impact of our actions on our teams and those around us. We are all human and there will be times when we show impatience, have an outburst etc

But always remember when "you point a finger at others, there are 3 of your fingers on the same hand pointing back to you"

The golden rule is always to provide constructive feeedback in private, give recognition in public.
Learning that element of self control will pay dividends 10 fold.

Appreciate to Accumulate!

The number one reason for people leaving their roles is not feeling appreciated. So a test, try and touch this plus sign, try and touch it on the screen....

+

Have you tried to touch it? If so that was not trying, that was doing...you did touch it.

Trying is a word overused in business...try and do this, well I have tried etc By using the word try you confuse people....they have a way out, they don't know whether you really believe that they can do it.

So tomorrow replace the word try with do. You either do something or you don't do something. Show your belief either in yourself or others.
